的 first of its kind in Missouri 和 the region, Northwest’s 数据科学 major is an interdisciplinary program with four areas of emphasis: 计算机科学, 业务, molecular biology 和 geographic information systems. This major provides students with a balanced curriculum incorporating 计算机科学, 统计数据, 业务, 和 social sciences.

的 业务 emphasis is designed for students interested in analyzing data 和 projecting the best option for a client. Faculty focus on ensuring students have tools to analyze big data 和 make proper 业务 decisions.
的 计算机科学 emphasis focuses on ensuring students know the tools necessary to interpret 和 present data. With these skills, students can write a program, extract meaning from the data 和 construct the client’s project.
的 geographic information systems (GIS) emphasis focuses on visualizing data through digital 和 physical maps, analyzing data for locational patterns 和 trends as well as presenting data in map-based 和 graphical formats to inform locational decisions in 业务, government 和 the non-profit sector.
的 molecular biology emphasis focuses on bioinformatics, the crossroads between lab science 和 analytics. 今天, scientists use a variety of approaches for characterizing cells 和 their interactions with each other 和 their environments. 的se approaches include genomics, the sequencing of whole genomes to determine the potential of a specific gene; transcriptomics, analyzing when 和 why genes are turned on or off at a given time; metabolomics, determining which metabolites are present or absent in a cell; 和 proteomics, determining which proteins are present or absent in a cell. Faculty focus on teaching how data are collected, analyzed 和 interpreted.
